BEYOND ZERO

Toyota’s electrified vehicle lineup includes a range of unique powertrains, giving customers the power of choice for reducing carbon emissions. A clear, consistent structure for what we call them and how we represent them ensures all powertrain communications are comprehensive and easy to understand.

Hybrid EV

Hybrids run on a combination of gas and a battery-powered electric motor(s) that uses the vehicle’s braking energy and combustion engine to recharge the battery, rather than charging from being plugged in. This allows for better mpg compared to the gas-only Toyotas you already know and love.

Plug-in Hybrid EV icon that uses an electric plug graphic.
Plug-in Hybrid EV

Plug-in Hybrids can run farther than Hybrids on electric power alone, thanks to their larger battery pack. For all-electric power, plug-in to charge the battery. When the charge is used up, Plug-in Hybrids carry on like regular Hybrids.

Battery EV

Purely electric, these vehicles use battery-powered electric motors, for smooth and almost instantaneous torque. They use the same regenerative-charging technology as Hybrids when being driven, but source the rest of their power when you plug them in and charge them up, rather than from a combustion engine.

Fuel Cell EV

Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles don’t use a battery to charge. Instead, they run entirely on electric power generated by combining stored hydrogen with oxygen from the outside air. They refuel with hydrogen instead of gas for zero emissions.

Nomenclature
Nomenclature

Consistency and clarity are key when educating customers about our powertrains. Using the same nomenclature every time boosts familiarity with our lineup and makes the choice easier for customers. See below for the names and order you should always use whenever you’re referring to the four powertrains.

List of nomenclature on gradient background that reads Hybrid EV, Plug-in Hybrid EV, Battery EV, Fuel Cell EV

Powertrain Names

Use the specific terms above to describe the different powertrains. Do not add, subtract or modify any of these words.

EV Acronym

EV is short for “Electric Vehicle” and is always written as an acronym and included as part of the powertrain name.

Order of Appearance

Use this order when listing the powertrains: Hybrid EV, Plug-in Hybrid EV, Battery EV, Fuel Cell EV.

Nomenclature Watchouts

Incorrect examples of nomenclature that shows the text Hybrid Max instead of Hybrid EV, Plugin Hybrid EV with no hyphen, All Electric instead of Battery EV, Fuel Cell Electric instead of Fuell Cell EV.

Don’t modify the powertrain nomenclature. For instance, do not replace the name or EV acronym with other terms such as “All-Electric” or “Battery Electric.”

Incorrect example of nomenclature that shows a list of standalone acronyms HEV, PHEV, BEV, FCEV.

Avoid using standalone acronyms (HEV, PHEV, BEV, FCEV) in marketing materials, as these may not be common knowledge.

Incorrect example of a Mirai vehicle logo with the added text Fuel Cell EV.

Don’t add powertrain nomenclature to any logo. It is not permitted to modify Toyota or Beyond Zero logos in any way or to create custom lockups.

Iconography
Iconography

Four unique icons are available for download to showcase each powertrain. Pair icons with the nomenclature text using the guidelines below. Premade lockups are available in the downloads section. These lockups have been created using best practices to ensure consistency.

Nomenclature

Icons should always be paired with the corresponding nomenclature typeset in Toyota Type Book, title-case.

Configurations

Placing the nomenclature below or to the right of the icon is preferred. However, placement is flexible and should be customized to best suit your execution.

Scale

The preferred icon sizes are 32px and 64px for digital. Larger sizes may be applicable by execution.

Highlighting One Powertrain

For powertrain education materials that leverage a single vehicle in imagery, the featured powertrain icon and its nomenclature should be displayed at 100% opacity and include an underline beneath the type. The remaining powertrain icons should be displayed at 60% opacity with no underline. Premade lockups with and without the underline are available in downloads.

Arrangements

Icon lockups are available in a vertical configuration (nomenclature below the icon) as well as a horizontal configuration (nomenclature to the right of the icon). Either configuration may be arranged in a side-by-side or stacked arrangement following the spacing guidelines below.

Illustrative Graphics
Illustrative Graphics

The illustrative graphics are distinct from the powertrain icons and are only used in specific applications. While they share a similar visual style, they are only for use at a larger scale in places where the Toyota brand is already established, such as in an environment or event space.
